Early Life & Musical Training
The son of a renowned professor of bassoon and saxophone studies and of an active soprano singer and homemaker, David grew up surrounded by live music. From a young age he began learning a variety of instruments, and soon entertained himself by exploring harmonies and chord progressions. After high school David was admitted to the University of Iowa School of Music where he earned his Bachelor of Music in flute performance, studying with Betty Mather and Roger Mather. He also majored in composition, studying with Richard Hervig and Martin Jenni, and played the baritone saxophone in various jazz ensembles (incl. local favorite “Johnson County Landmark”) and in symphonic wind ensembles.
Healthcare Career
After completing his music studies David pursued a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from University of Illinois at Chicago, graduating with honors, and he worked primarily in drug information and pharmacovigilance over a span of three decades. His love for music was always, and still remains today, a relentless motivator. A mid-westerner transplanted to Denver, CO, USA during his professional life, he continues to make Denver his home with his wife and their son, a gifted cellist and composer.
Epic Musical Fantasy Cycle
David’s 3-act opera, Song of Sidhedark, was completed in 2023, based upon the fantasy novel The Infinity Concerto, Book 1 of Songs of Earth & Power by famed hard science fiction author Greg Bear. David continues to pursue production of this work for the live stage, and two or three additional operas are planned for the cycle.
